Gunmen attack NYSC lodge in Akwa Ibom

NYSC - National Youth Service Corps

In the early hours of Wednesday, the gunmen broke into the lodge on Udo Ekong Ekwere Street, off Information Drive, in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, and stole the possessions of the Corps members.

Although the attack was confirmed, the state's NYSC management denies that any corps members were sexually assaulted.

Chinyere Ekwe, the NYSC coordinator for Akwa Ibom State, said in a statement that she visited the Corps members for an on-the-spot evaluation along with Olatoye Durosinmi, the state police commissioner.

"It was discovered there that the property as mentioned earlier is occupied by 21 Corps personnel. The conversations with the Corps members also made it clear that thieves truly committed a robbery that occurred at around 1 in the morning.

"During this time, the intruders stole their possessions, including laptops, phones, and some cash. They affirmed that they did not suffer any physical harm, and no Corps member was violated.

She continued by saying that while the deeds and motives of the criminal elements remain deplorable. social media users and online media outlets should use restraint and refrain from making light of such a tragic incident.

This is to avoid the psychological effects on parents and guardians of Corps members in the state that could be dangerously adverse.

Mrs. Ekwe did, however, reveal that the State Commissioner of Police had informed Corps members and the general public that an inquiry into the incident had been started and that the offenders would soon be caught.
